I am excited to share that at the end of this year I will begin a six month journey as an English teacher in São Paulo, Brazil. I am blessed to have family there who has welcomed me into their home and will serve as my "home away from home" during my stay abroad. This is an experience that I have been dreaming about for my entire life; ever since I can remember I have envisioned myself living outside of the United States. As many of you know, my plans have changed frequently over the past few years, yet the Lord has opened up a door for me to begin my journey as His servant overseas. I have committed my vacation and my volunteer work into His hands, and it is my prayer that He will guide my footsteps and lead me wherever He wants me to be while I am there.
Many people have asked me how I will handle living in a country that "isn't quite the United States." Over the past few months I have given a lot of thought to how my life is going to be different during my time in Brazil as well as how I view life here in the US. After considerable amount of thought I realize that I have never been more ready to leave behind the materialism and extreme individualism that bombards every nook and cranny of American life. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a thing against the US and I am not complaining about our plethora of conveniences; all I am saying is that I am ready to break out of the perfect middle-class American shell that has defined my life for 18 years. As I am studying the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) and I am learning that God looks at the heart and the spirit of the law instead of the outward appearance of the law, I have realized that culture and lifestyle is in many ways very similar. Having traveled to Latin America three times I realize that there exists, deeply ingrained in their culture, a sense of community, family, and team work that is foreign to many American initiatives. When looking on the map, Brazil may not look at attractive as the United States as far as appearance goes (although each place has their regions of excellent beauty and extreme poverty), however, it is my goal throughout the next chapter of my life to observe, understand, and internalize the beauty that lies within the people and the culture in Brazil.
Please check back here often to follow along with me on my journey, starting with the planning and preparation to leave, all the way through updates about things that I am doing and new foods that I am trying while in Brazil. I will also be volunteering as an English teacher at a local community outreach center and will therefore be describing how the Lord is leading me there to teach His children and show them the love that He has for each one of us. I would love to hear from all of you as well while I am gone so feel free to comment on my posts, send me emails, or message me on Facebook. Please keep me in your prayers that I would remain safe and that my work there would ultimately bring glory to my Father in Heaven.
